Engine replacement on ground advice
 

I’m about to replace my engine without a lift. Has anyone done this? Any advice on getting the car high enough?

I just did this on a lift. My lift points are 49" off the ground right now, and my cart is 23" high and I had about 2" to spare getting it out. So you need to get the lift points 24" off the ground plus the height of whatever cart you are going to use minimum.

I would get a set of 6 ton jack stands, most go to about 24", and for additional clearance put a piece of 2x6 underneath them. Try and find a cart with low pro wheels.

You need the 6 tons, cuz otherwise your a few inches short. Sucks but real.

You can do it with a QuickJack.

Drive the car up on ramps, all four wheels. You can make your own ramps from 2"x12" ply planks.

Place the QuickJacks on planks or layers of planks that are the same height as the ramps and wide and long enough to support the entire QuickJack frame. Lift the car up as you normally wold.

You need 24 inches of clearance to drop the engine. Remove the bumper and muffler and the rest. You do not need to remove the axles, just tie them up out of the way. Remove engine and trans together. Watch my videos. Not so hard, good luck. It’s easier with help but I’ve done it by myself with no major problems.

You might need more than 24 inches depending on how you are catching everything so you can wheel it out.
Initial try my first time I had the car up 25.5 inches and ran into issues because we had a floor jack catching everything. Took a couple of hours to coax the car up higher with blocks under the jack stands. Memory fades on this and I don’t remember all the details, but remember really wishing I had a traditional lift at the time.
