Found my m96... a bit iffy

Having missed the RND rebuilt (by minutes, I’m sure) offered by LN Engineering recently, I’ve decided to go out on a limb and have purchased a 3.6 which runs but has a knock. Since I only paid $1500 CAD for it (about $1100 USD), I am willing to put a fair bit of change into the repair/rebuild. I suspect cylinder scoring but I’ll only know after the teardown. (Oh yay, I get to produce another YouTube video for my channel!).

It probably takes about five to six months to have LN install Nickies, as I am finding out. Hartech is a company that will replace just 1 scored cylinder or one bank, if you only need that and want to stay at 3.6 liters. Dayton Sleeves makes sleeves for the M96/M97 3.6 that are ductile steel or cast iron, and there is another company who installs cast iron cylinder sleeves in the M96/M97 engines whose name escapes me. I went with the Nickies, there is some controversy over cast iron/ductile steel cylinder liners for these engines. Looking at the price for OEM Porsche piston rings, the cost of the Nickies didn't seem so horrible.

Wow, that’s a long wait! I will definitely look into other possibilities. I don’t mind staying at 3.6.

They use one of the best platers in the country for the cylinder bores, and that plater does lots of engines for cars, motorcycles and snowmobiles. The plating is done after the block is machined and the cylinders are inserted. Hope you're lucky and you don't need it!

Pulled the filter. Some small metal bits were hiding in the pleats. I expected as much.
LN said 6 or so weeks turnaround for the sleeves and nickies if I send them the block halves.

I hope they’re right! Last August my estimate was at least 8 weeks!
