the quick giveaway is the last pic that says it is from a 2000. or, note that it has a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel line - this means a dual line fuel system - pre 2002.

Have your seen this:
03 Boxster S for Sale
"(only 18.2K miles on replacement motor)"
$8K US.
Drive it home and sell parts to help pay for it. Or keep the car till you can pick up another engine with more miles and flip it.

Captain Obvious here... if you bought that car, took the engine out, and parted the rest, you'd probably have only paid a few thousand for the engine once it was all said and done. There is a LOT of nice parts on that car.

Did you find a motor yet? I have a friend with a shop that specializes in Porsches that has a rebuilt 3 chain 3.2 for sale. He rebuilt it for his race car but has since decided to go a different direction.

Hi Woody. Yes and no to your question. I picked up a 3.6 with an ims failure for cheap. I’m starting to tear it down now thinking to rebuild it. This may take me some time so I would be interested to have some details on your friend’s engine. You can pm me with any info. Cheers, James

so ... the parts that change in a 7.2 to 7.8 dme conversion are abs pump, gauge cluster, hvac controller and, of course, the dme. although the boxster went to the 7.8 dme in 2003, all other systems were updated in 2002 in anticipation of the change (check pet; abs pump, gauge cluster, hvac controller all changed in 2002). now, when the boxster went to the 7.8 dme in 2003 it also went to the newer 3.2 engine.
what am i trying so say? what i'm saying is that you should be able to put a earlier 5-chain engine in your car, as long as you also plug in a 7.2 dme, probably change a few pinouts, and push a 2002 flash onto the car.
you might have more luck finding an earlier 3.2, or better yet a 3.4.
thought that i'd send you some hope after the gut shot of those gut shots of your 3.6 nightmare.
