Engine Swap Options

Hi All, I poked around the forums and couldn't find an answer to this question:

I have a 2004 Boxster S that I will be doing an engine swap on (apparent crankshaft failure). I know from Wayne's guide on Pelican Parts that it will take any later Boxster/Cayman engine. However, is that ONLY through MY 2008 donors?

ie, can I put a 987.2 3.4L engine (MA121) with DFI in or is it limited to most recent M97 engine ie M97.2x.

And when I say put in, I mean in about as straight forward a fashion as a swap to the M96 engines.

Thanks!
