what is it?
Found a black 4" long about 0.5" diameter tube with wires attached hanging from N/S front of 986 right near the plastic trims that extend under the wheel arch liner. Does any one know what it is please? I noticed a rusty clip on it and it seems to have broken off. My idea was it could be a temp sensor for the radiator or? Ideas please...

Hmmmmm. IV drip or the capacitor for the radiator fan.......Run over anything lately? If not then capacitor.

If it has green and white wires attached to it, it's the low speed fan resistor

Thanks everyone you guessed it without a photo...Is that rusty metal behind it my actual car chassis or some cheap sub-frame cross member!!!

Wow are your roads made of salt out there?!? I've never seen that bracket that rusty before. On another note, your resistor looks like it's about to go out if it hasn't already. They get dark like that as they age. "generally speaking"

Yes I am in the UK...So that rusty metal is just a bracket? So glad it isn't the bodywork.
And maybe the 'low speed fan resistor' is on the way out? What may happen if it goes then - do the fans on the radiator stop are there fans on them?

Your fans won't work at low speed. Only high.

Thanks Woody - does that mean there are two fans at the rear of the radiators? I know there is one for the engine bay

No need to answer last question Woody just seen photos on Pelican Parts showing fan and resistor in place so now know where it fits on

There is only one fan for each radiator. The resistor simply reduces the amount of current reaching the fan motor to create the "low speed", thus when the resistor fails, full current is continuously sent to the radiator fan and it always operates at high speed only. If one of the radiator fan resistors fails, the other side is typically not far behind.
The engine compartment fan is completely different.
