Continental TR7412UB-OR Stereo Installation and Review

So I finally got my new Continental stereo installed. By using the custom harness from Bergvill F/X, it couldn't have been easier:

1. Pull out old stereo
2. Disconnect harness from old unit
3. Remove old installation frame and install new one that comes with the stereo.
4. Connect Bergvill harness to factory harness
5. Plug Bergvill harness into Continental unit
6. Push Continental unit into frame until it locks
7. Snap on trim piece
8. Enjoy the look and sound!

So I just got it into the car today, but initial impressions are good. Far more bass than factory unit, and the tone just sounds fuller. Bluetooth pairs easily, and calls seem clear. On the negative side, the USB looks a little sloppy with the cover hanging open when you have a jump drive plugged into it, but overall I'm very happy so far. Attached are some photos and a link to a quick video (for what it's worth).

Nice.
Keep,us posted.
I've bee eyeing that unit myself, as it looks as if it were a factory piece but with added modern features without looking like an aftermarket part.
Plays MP3 discs too, yes?
Care to share what it cost?

Hey Steve, this particular unit doesn't have a CD player, but there is a version with one. I think I paid about $180 CDN for mine. Take a look at the Bergvill F/X website.

Dulmer,

I like the look of it installed. I have an aftermarket pioneer that does not match the interior. After looking at it installed in yours, I think I may replace mine eventually.

That looks fabulous. Wow, so much better than the typical sparkly / cheesy aftermarket single DIN stereo that sticks out like a sore thumb. Nice choice.

Thanks! I wish it didn't have the chrome ring on the volume knob, but overall pleased with the appearance and sound quality.

Can you send pandora to the head unit now with bluetooth?

Not sure, as I don't use Pandora. I don't see why it wouldn't though.

So I have now tested receiving calls with the new stereo, and it does a great job. Sound is very clear and person on other end says I am very clear as well. Overall very happy, considering it was only $180.

I assume that this is not compatible with MOST/Bose systems

Not sure. Check on the Bergvill F/X website for more info.

I got the Bergville harness and everything connected, and the unit works very well, but I seem to be having trouble getting the bastard into the frame.

I've never had this much trouble with a head unit before, kind of baffled.
Wondering if maybe I lost a piece for fitment.

I took the metal collar off and slid the unit through the front, but the collar won't lock on the backside.
It's too big to fit into the hole in the frame with the metal collar on.

Any tips, or wtf did I miss?

FYI to anyone doing this, here is a link to the correct Bergville harness.

ryanjboutin 06-11-2017 09:35 AM

Well, never mind.

Just took a file and shave maybe 1.5 kvnt hairs off the sides until the retainer fit snug.

Probably install it after the Montreal GP.

Forza Ferrari! Go Seb!

Yeah, sorry, I forgot that step...a little filing/trimming is necessary.

Install is easy. I didn't take the whole face plate off to trim the sides. I used a Dremel with a small carbide burr which made very short work of it.

Done & done.

Was just wondering if anyone installed one of these decks in 2003S with the MOST system. Bergvill F/X seems to have an adapter for the Most system.

Excellent question; I'm interested in this as well.

Last we discussed on this, folks were thinking about using this adapter:

Dulmer, how is the unit's lighting at night in comparison to the OE Becker? Any photos?

The backlighting is a bit different from everything else, but it's pretty good. I'll try to take a few pics.

So as you can see, the backlighting is quite different from the display for the air conditioning, but the actual lighting on the buttons is quite close to the lighting of the buttons on the air-conditioning system itself. I think it looks good, and I love having my music on a USB stick and the ability to make or take phone calls.

Thanks. :) That looks pretty good, but I wonder how difficult it would be to do a negative display mod to the LCD.

It really does look like it's meant for the car. There is a big difference in the display background, but overall the system just looks right in the car. I get lots of compliments on it.

Nice, i think this is on my short list for my new boxster once i pick it up assuming it works with the Bose system. Where did you all mount the microphone for calls?

I didn't bother with the external mic. The one built into the stereo works perfectly.

This.

I have also found this to be accurate.

Although, I can only talk when the car is at idle, exhaust is too loud. lol

Boxter_John 01-24-2018 03:39 AM

Hi - I have just ordered the same head unit with the MOST adapter from Bergvill FX so will post my install once I get the bits.

I am about to order this setup for the 04 boxster s special edition. Is there a usb that you can hook in an ipod lightning cable that both supplies the music and charges it at the same time or do you have to charge it from an additional source? Great looking unit.

Brian in Tucson 01-28-2018 06:13 AM

Looks pretty sweet. My 01 has the climate control in the console, so I had space for a double din Pioneer in the dash. Always been happy with Pioneer, so it was a natural for me.

I'm older and don't like the feeling of being distracted from my driving. It's hard enough for me without some damned phone nagging me with spam calls for aluminum siding. So I didn't get the bluetooth on purpose. Love driving the Boxster without extra attention required. I remember when car radios had two knobs and you couldn't make a call in a car. So nothing lost for me.

If I hadn't just replaced my obsolete (not very good) broken OEM, I might spring for the one you chose. Really does look like it belongs.

Thanks for sharing.:D

M4tus 03-13-2018 02:05 AM

So does anyone have this unit in 2003 Boxster already?
I do not have BOSE but I have amplifier in front trunk.
...will it work for me as plug&play?

Cunningr 03-13-2018 01:37 PM

Question how do you remove the old frame? I am doing a single din test on radio i didnt really see anything to pull out.

M4tus: i dont have this specific radio but doing single din and have a factory amp the adaptors from metra everything plug and play. So i would think this one is same.

BTW does look nice.

M4tus 03-15-2018 07:01 AM

@Cunningr
But do you mean radio with optical cables? Called MOST? Cause this is the issue.
Factory setup which I have sounds fine for me. But no posiibility of USB connecting or AUX-in is problem.

No the becker radio, once you remove the radio should be a metal support frame i guess. Th3 nite says it releases like the radio with a key or something. Not pictures pretty confusing. A quick look i saw nothing that appeared removable.

I beleive i saw a kit though for the most type system. Check cai car audio innovations google cai porsche radio should pop up.

Booker42 03-19-2018 02:33 PM

Fun fact: Bergvillfx sells tiny little Porsche stickers that cover the "Continental" logo. A really nice touch if you are going for the retro-stock look.

US $7

Seadweller 03-22-2018 12:55 PM

Just to clarify, if you have a CD220 currently, with the amplifier in the frunk, this head unit, with the associated Bergvillfx harness, is 100% plug-and-play?
