On the lookout for an m96

As most of you know, my engine grenaded a few weeks back. :ah: I’m searching for a replacement m96 motor which will play nice with my DME 7.8. This would be a 3.2 from a 2003-2004 Boxster or a 3.4 or 3.6 from a 911 2002 or later (I think). Any suggestions to where I might look? I live in Montreal but am not adverse to having something shipped.

2001 motor won't work for an 04 engine computer.

If you want, pm me more details on the 01 motor though.

Thanks, but I need something ‘03 or later to work with my 7.8 dme. (Unless it’s from a 996 which changed in ‘02)

An M97 3.8 may also work if you get the ECU and engine wiring harness. Before I decided to get my 2003 S engine rebuilt, my shop had a totaled 987 Cayman track car with a 3.8 factory crate engine and the owner was looking at parting it out. My shop said the engine would work in my car but the cost for the engine, ancillary equipment and labor was about 33% more than I am expecting to pay for a rebuild with the IMS Solution and LN Nickies increasing my engine to 3.6 liters so I didn't pursue it.

There were 2 or 3 3-chain 3.2 M96 engines for 2003-2004 on eBay last time I looked. The prices weren't bad but they all higher mileage - 80k or 100k. Specialized German in Rancho Cordova, California had a lower mileage 2003-2004 S 3.2 maybe around 50k for around $8k last summer if I recall correctly. I did a lot of looking before deciding to have mine rebuilt. Good luck with your search!

So, just how "tunable" are our ECU's? Back in the day, it was as simple as programming an EPROM and slapping it into the Motronic ECU. It seems the easiest bang for the buck HP performance upgrade is doing the 3.6 Nickies, but wouldn't that require a new fueling map, or would the ECU "learn" the setup? I've seen the various programming tools for the newer engines, but haven't seen much for our cars and our electronics.

Seems to be lots of 2.7s out there. Very few 3.2s and always at 2 to 3 times the price!

PaulÈ, A 3.8 would be lovely but rather pricey. A rebuild is out of the question since I have no core to work with!

My own 2003 S engine is going to be rebuilt as a 3.6 with LN Nickies whenever the case eventually comes back from LN. My shop tells me the thing that takes the most time is the plater they use. Once the case is bored out and the sleeves are inserted, they need to be plated and then go back to LN to go through a final precision finish/polish. The plater takes a long time. My shop says the ECU can be tuned. They will install an off the shelf tune in my car's ECU, and then we'll go from there. They have a dyno and my tune can be further tweaked and customized if necessary. In addition to the 3.6 Nickies, my car will also have a 987 airbox and Fabspeed headers with catalysts. For now the intake plenum and throttle body will remain stock, I'm not sure if the 987 MAF or 986 MAF is going to be used. I know a lot of folks have gone to a bigger intake plenum and throttle body - my shop has said they've not seen improvements on their dyno with those modifications, so I'm going to stick with the original plenum and throttle body for now.

When it comes to the engine and major stuff, I am not a do-it-yourself guy - I draw the line for DIY at brake pads and rotors, radiator cleaning, short shifter installation, rear speaker kit installation, OBC stalk installation. I did the ignition switch once and when it failed the second time because I used one I bought at NAPA in a pinch that was made in China from lower quality plastic, I had my shop upgrade it to the 987 lock and switch.

So I'm going with the recommendations from my shop on the engine because I'm have to rely on them to make it work.

Very nice but pricey and you need a core, which I don’t have.

Could you put a standing order with LA Dismantlers and or the like? This way you have shot at stuff that comes up, right away..

Sorry I don't have a good Canadian example for you.

Maybe. I talked to a fellow in Calgary who sells engines adverised on Kijiji. It seems that he acts as a middleman sourcing his engines from a dismantler in Texas.
