Car sometimes can't start

Hi,

I have been facing this problem only for the past few days. Sometimes (maybe 2/10 times).. when I put my key in and turn the car.. the car doesn't start.. the engine is totally silent..

The electrical works as usual works.. Aircon, light, radio etc but the engine doesn't start.

I have to try a few more times before it starts..

Is this an engine problem?

You probably need an ignition switch

Is there any sound from the starter? Yes ignition switches are a weak point in the sequence but the Crank Position Sensor could be at fault too.

Is there anything different happening in the 2 failures that might be different from the 8 successes? Hot engine? 12 hours between starts? Wet out? Tank full?

Or you're not pushing the clutch in all the way.

I think his car is Tiptronic.

My guess is that Woody is correct about the ignition switch. Otherwise:

Tiptronic Selector switch (gear selector switch) on the transmission could be corroded or faulty. The car needs to be in (P) or (N) to crank the starter. I'm pretty sure that selector switch is what sends the signal.

After that, what about the Start Lock Relay? I think that takes the signal from either the clutch switch or selector switch and trips to activate the starter. In the trunk, left side.

Guessing is fun when it's someone else's car.

If TIP, my car did it sometimes and I'd wiggle the gear selector and the steering wheel and it would always start. Never bothered to fix or diagnose. Just figured something somewhere was a bit loose.
