1) Check the metal particles to see if they are ferrous - just pass a magnet over them. If they are non magnetic, I would think that it is normal shedding from an all alloy engine.

2) Its always good practice to drop the sump - its like a mirror of what's going on and can indicate the general health of the engine. While the pan is off, check the oil pump screen for any caught up sealant - another indicator the someone has overindulged the gasket sealant....
