Noisy forks n stuff

Possibly buying a buddy's 2005 Boxster S w/ a 6spd manual w/ 60K miles.
the amount of clangng the gearbox makes when you move around the gear selector is really noticable... almost alarming.
Car runs fine but it's so loud when moving the forks around.
What gives... is this normal?
Everything else on the car seems so well made and in good shape after a decade.

There shouldn't be any "clanging" or noise from the Porsche 6 speed gearbox - either stationary or while in motion.
Can you isolate the sound - inside the cabin, outside where the gearchange cables attach to the R/H side of the transmission or the gearbox itself.

It's when it's stationary.
I had a getrag in a Z24 chevy back in the day that made some noise, 100LS audi was very quiet as was my E30 track car.
The boxster sounds like ur banging wrenches when you row the gear stationary or engage 1st or reverse.

Oh... in cabin.
You would think Porsche would have insulated the cabin so it doesn't sound so "cheesy"

My 02 S is butter smooth and silent so if you have clanking noise something is very wrong .

Cars back with its owner now so no recording available but it is clearly the sound of the forks moving around when you engage different gears.
I'm in no hurry to buy so I'll check out other ones.

That's what I thought.
Im aware of TSB's for engines and transmissions for the boxsters and I'm weary of being on the verge of a failure.

I'm no mechanic, but when buying any Porsche, even from a friend, have a pre-purchase inspection done by a qualified shop. A failing gearbox could just be the beginning. Worst case scenario, you add $300 to the cost of the car. Best case scenario, you spend $300 to save many, many thousands.
