boxster targa

look at these crazy euros ...

and when they're done ...

wonder if you could do something similar for the boxster. using the existing tonneau cover as a base, fabricate a hoop (stainless if you want to go old school) that goes over the roll bar between the two spinlocks/puzzle pieces. form some plexi that follows the outer edge of the tonneau for that classic targa rear window look. fab a canvas targa top that uses the convertible top front bar to mate w your windshield. you would need the square 996 side windows in order to follow the hoop (ours are curved and wouldn't work) which means that there would be no going back to your old soft or hard top. opens the doors for that 986 spyder conversion on ebay however (or eric's 996-look boxster race hardtop).

I have often thought about designing a targa top for the 986. I love my hardtop and my convertible! This would be a cool and stylish compromise!

cool. got a tape measure? what is the width of the hoop at the base - anything close to the width of the boxster spinlock to spinlock? because these are available ...

The targa on older models is too square in shape, I'm working on a hardtop and the very small side windows on the boxster represent a challenge to make it a targa which was my initial goal, I'm at the buck/plug stage and will see soon if feasible if not, the removable targa section according to my measurements will not fit in any of the trunks (which kind of defeats the purpose for me) I might just cut a huge moonroof removable top panel as I want to use this most of the year.

the side windows - thats why you use 996 windows.
storing the targa top - it will fit where the soft too usually sits. the front bar fits, a similar rear bar would fit, and the centre would be canvas and fold.

the 996 windows would mean no more soft top, similar to this ...

I really don't think this would work on a Boxster. The top isn't long enough...the back of the canvas top is too close to where the bar would be.

you're right. the backend looks not so good. here's a pic of my car w just the z-top rear hatch installed, to give an idea of what a boxster targa might look like as a fastback. image the targa bar, and some quarter windows to fill the gaps ...

A fancy top for the Boxster would be a removable roof akin to the carrera gt.

Just the roll bars and removable hard top. That would look nice

you're right. I think the back would need more finishing, however - add a rear hatch and quarter windows and you might have something cool.

Could you sketch this with just the rollbar and no targa glass? Maybe with speedster humps.

What I'm doing with mine is making the hoop slant forward to mimic the 918 spyder style and that will allow me to make the targa smaller, mine has no big wraparound glass but a rear hatch with smaller glass (not really glass but HIP clear plastic is a non yellowing unbreakable type of polycarbonate), for engine access and it replaces the convertible top and clam shell completely, see my avatar or a new picture I posted in general discussions under "stelan targa project rendering"

Targa's can look pretty cool - the challenge with a Boxster Targa is the back end. Radium is on the right track with the Z-top as it creates a very slick back end. The other renderings create a very unattractive back end - makes the car look dated and pieced together.

Thats a cool idea, I'll explore the posibilty of a canvas folding targa if the rigid targa proves too big for storaging in the car
