My emergency release was disconnected because of the rubber grommet breaking (it holds the cable end on to the release lever). I was also having immobilizer issues, so I actually loosened up the bumper cover everywhere I could (except for under the hood of course) and go in far enough to release the lever with a blade screwdriver. It's as annoying as it sounds. You have to get it up between the lever and what it's hooked on to. If I had realized I needed to replace the immobilizer anyway, I would have waited to do that, but I didn't know enough at the time.
