				Autocross tires

For those that autocross your Boxster, what is a good tire to recommend for this type of driving combined with about 5K of road use a year. I noticed a few running Bridgestone Potenza R-11 I believe. I know this is as subjective as "what oil do i use" but I really just want guys/gals that auto-X to chime in. Thanks

The tire I run and have seen others use in the street classes is the Dunlop Direzza ZII. It's been a fantastic tire so far and hasn't worn out on me too quickly. If you get anything with a lower rating than the ZII's 200, I think it bumps you to another class, so that's one thing to consider.

I have been AXing R888's for 3 years and like them very much. they also do well on track days, so sort of dual purpose. I do swap to regular tires for the winter, as the do NOT do well in wet. They are also VERY noisy, so don't be surprised by that.

The fast guys at my autocross are running Zii, rs-3, or gforce rivals. All the fast Miata guys have the zii. At the track the rs-s seems to be the most common extreme summer 200tw tire.

Oops. Youre right, Hankook RS-3s.

I actually prefer the stick of 275/35/18 Hankook Z214 C91 compounds on OZ rims on all 4 corners for autoX

			Another vote for the ZII's.

RS-3's are another great choice, but were hard to find last year.

If you have the ability to wait a month or two, you may want to see how the latest crop of tires work out.

A few reports say the the new RE71R is very good.

There is also a new Rival compound that is just coming out.

The RS3 Ver. 2, which I believe came out near the end of last year supposedly solved the poor wet and cold performance of the previous RS3, but I wonder if they have ruined the heat tolerance the way Dunlop did with the ZII.

Apparently Dunlop tried to fix the poor cold weather performance of the ZI when they developed the ZII, and they certainly did that, but the hot weather performance suffered greatly. The ZII StarSpec came out late last year, and I hear they are improved, but I wonder if they are still giving up higher temperature performance.

NT-01's do quite well in hot weather, and not so bad in cool weather if your rules allow.

Of course, if your rules allow you to run A7's, nothing else will touch those.

I have recently purchased a 2001 and it came with Continental DWS. From what I am reading they are probably a good DD tire but not that good for Auto X. Or do these work well for both?

That seems to be what all the M3 and Z4M BMW guys run - I was going to put a set on my Z4M, but ended up selling it...
