huge difference felt after oil change its the 3rd for my 2000s with 25,000 miles.
Is 10,000 miles/1 year too long an interval?
I think Porsche claims 15,000 miles.

I shoot for what the good people at Porsche recommend for oil change intervals... Except for the part where they say to take it to the dealer$hip.

Based on some fairly sound oil analysis that I have seen, I would not go beyond 7500 miles or 1 year IF I were keeping the car for a long period of time, ie if I were liable for anything that happened to the engine.

If I were selling at warranty end, I would likely do the 15K.

Nice fiction, that 15K or 20 K oil change interval.

I try and get it done every 5,000-7,500(never beyond 7,500). I don’t care what anyway says synthetic or not its oil and 15k sounds ridiculous to me

I'm going for my first oil change next week since I bought my car about a year ago.....Its about 7500 miles since the car was changed (just changed prior to me buying it). The oil looks a little bit visually darker than I remember it. Perfectlap, when you say you noticed a huge difference, specifically, what did you notice?

Did you change viscosity? If not, I'd be concerned if you could "feel" the difference after a change - it would mean a perceptible difference in engine friction and that would imply significant wear exposure before (I presume you mean it feels better now). I'd do more frequent changes in the future and just keep repeating to myself "placebo effect" to keep my thoughts off of what could have happened up to now. I'm doing 1 year/~5K miles (works out to about the same thing for me) with the synthetic (DD w/conventional gets 3K).

Change once a year. I am driving about 6,000 to 7,000 per year at most now. I use the car as my daily driver about 20 miles a day or so. Fuel up every other week.

no they use black cap Mobil 1 at the dealer. Same as the last oil change.

I'm thinking that the oil filter may have quit a bit sooner.
Probably safe to change the the oil for 10,000 miles (once a year) and change the oil filter every 5,000 miles or every six months. Changing the filter in between oil changes seems like the best option.

p.s.
I think my culprit was a dirty air filter and not the oil. I waited 10,000 miles too long. I think 15,000 miles as per the factory is pushing it to begin with.

What about the 987's? The manufacture says you only need to do oil change every 20K miles. Are they full of it?

In a word, yes. Now to qualify, if I am going to keep my new Porsche until warranty end and then sell it, then by all means, I am fine about 20K changes with top off.

However, if I am going to be financially liable for this car at some point, then, no way is 20K OK.

Even AMSOIL would tell you that you need to start changing oil filters around 10K to keep the synthetic oil OK.

Several credible tests on M1 suggest 12K is pushing it, w/o changes in oil filters along the way.

To me, a 7500 change is fine IF I am on the hook for the engine.

Hi,

Interestingly, the Porsche Dealer Service Manual (Sec. 03 17) suggests an Oil ONLY Change at 20k mi. without a Filter change. It says:

" Note
· The oil filter only has to be replaced after every second oil change."

To me, this is absolute MADNESS! Probably Good for the Dealer though!

But, it does bring to mind a Caution for those having their Oil changed at the Dealer. Be sure to insist to the SA that the Oil Filter also be changed along with the Oil (wonder if this will affect the Price?). The Change has much more to do with removing the Dirt and Contaminates which the Oil picks up than it does with renewing any Lubrication Qualities. To keep a Used Filter, counteracts this purpose...

As usual, Jim is dead on. The guys at Porsche who dictated the every other oil change rec. clearly know NOTHING about oil.

Legally, I don't see the liability. Marketing/image wise, maybe. There is already considerable after-purchase animosity against BMW for it extended service recommendations (read the lifetime fill on their tranmissions).
