Transmission bites it
I took the car to the store this morning and leaving the parking lot as I shifted to second I hit some standing water the car spun up about 200 rpm left side and grabbed. The noise was awful. No second gear at all. Every other gear just howls. I limped the half mile home in 3rd.

Looked quickly on Ebay, in the parts manuals on line, and reference material online. It looks like I could use a 986, 2003 2004 or 987 2005 2006 non S transmission. Is anyone familiar with any changes in the 2005-2006 other than a slight change in the final drive ratio.

Ouch! Expensive repair for a puddle of water. I guess better to have happened close to home than mile away and if it happened that quickly then it was probably going to go at some point anyway. Sorry can't help with the ratios ... other than in my experience ratios are tied to engine output and wheel size. If both of those are similar for the cars in question then the ratios should be compatible.

Is it a 5 speed manual? I believe the trans is the same as some Audi a4...but ratios sure to be different.

As I've said before- fragile. Time to become an expert on transmissions? I wonder if the 6 speed has enough extra beef to make the mods required, worth while?

6-speed was designed for the extra power & weight of the 996 so no problem there.

The Transmission is on the floor of my garage and I'm waiting for the replacement to come. low mileage 03.
I'd really be interested in Knowing the distance between the hubs of the 6-speed Transmission. I Know they have 10 MM bolts which will fit through the 03-04 CV joints.

The transmission is in and the car is back on the road. The new box serviced flushed out and new oil run through and replaced a second time.

Something you may want to consider, is to use the earlier, lower geared 1997-99 transmission. It should be a lot livelier in town and coming out of slower corners.
Strange how second gear just disappeared. Normally shredding an axle or breaking the ring/pinion gear is typical with abruptly finding traction the way you did.
