Boxster S - Rear Strut Failure?

Hi Everyone,
I have Boxster S 2003. My car hasn't been performing quite as good as it used to. The other day, while driving, I noticed a weird notice, thought it was something with the engine, when I stopped I saw that it was the tire making the noise, there was a big CUT in the inner side of the tire( see pic ). When I got home, I took off the tire but I couldn't find anything that it would be rubbing against to cause that nasty cut, the closest thing is the Suspension Strut/Shock. Anyone had that happen before? is it just that or is it something bigger? How much does it cost to have the struts replaces dealer vs indie?...
Any info greatly appreciated.
