Manually operated top...?
Read somewhere it was possible to remove the motor and transmissions and operate the top manually...

With the motor/trans out of the equation how does the clamshell "lock" when the top is either up or down?

Would be a great idea.Always had manually operated convertibles.

All the the power items just add complexity,weight and cost.

How hard could it really be to raise and lower this tiny top! Count me in.

no scale, but i have the motor and transmissions in my hand right now and they feel like around 20 lbs.

I'm not a fan. 20lbs weight means you've effectively gained a little over 1 Hp. Not worth it as far as performance.

The Boxster top mechanism is elegantly simple for what it does. I'll keep mine and repair if necessary.
