03' 3.6l and IMS....Problems?

Hello,

I contemplating purchasing a 99 box that somehow received a 03' 3.6L motor. Is such a motor as susceptible to the same IMS failures (or "D" chunks) as the standard 2.5L & 3.4L's?

Also, Rated HP of said 3.6L

Regards, PK

From what I've read the D chunks were problems in 2.5l engines. 3.6l should yield 315hp & 273 lb ft. torque per Porsche listing. As far as an IMS, I think if you have it, it can be susceptible.

They are all more or less similar and to varying degrees have similar failure modes.

I have not seen a 3.6 with a d-chunk -- but I have seen cracked cylinder liners.

Yes, all of the M96-based engines (2.5L, 2.7L, 3.2L, 3.4L, and 3.6L) use an intermediate shaft and are susceptible to a bearing failure. How susceptible is a matter of great debate.

The comparable years 996 Turbo and GT- cars used a different engine design and do not have this concern.

What kind of a 3.6? There are 3.6s that received the LN kit which strengthens the cylinder liners. Or 3.6s from a 911. Or maybe done with other parts. Before buying, learn what is really in the engine. Were there any upgrades done when the install was done? What ECU the thing is using? Any mods to the smog equipment that would cause you inspection concerns in your state?

as far as i can tell it's just a stock 3.6.It apparently has a carra plenum but no claims of any internal mods. I guess Its just a crap shoot eh
