Gear selection cable not connected at linkage

...lost all gears bar 3rd/4th - nice.

Got it home and took off the console, all OK there but the right hand cable decidedly limp.

Looking at the rear I can see that the cable has come apart from the ball joint link thing - the metal end has come out of connector. Has it sheared? Or is it connected and tightened somehow? Was thinking of epoxying it back into it's hole but suspect this will only prolong replacement.
