Cleaning lug bolts.

I just picked up 20 used lug bolts. They need to have some dirt and a little surface rust removed so I can hit them with spray paint. Short of an ultrasonic parts cleaner (which I don't have access to), any suggestions? I've heard of using vinegar. I know I can use a wire brush or wire wheel on a drill or table grinder, but they're a pain to hold, and I always end up grinding off skin when I do that.

Good thread, but I was more interested in ways to remove the rust without using a wire brush. Sounds like I'll have to bite the bullet and wire brush 'em.

There is also a rust remover liquid you can buy to soak the parts in overnite. Any auto restoration supplier should sell it.

Naval Jelly? Anyway, boiling for a few minutes in vinegar cleaned them up nicely. Guess I'll wire brush a little before I paint 'em. Thanks all.

Not Naval Jelly. There's many brands, but something like this, from a quick Google:

No need for jelly or rust dissolver. And no need to wire brush with hand. Use a table wise to hold the bolt and use a drill with the below wire brush attachment. Comes out clean in seconds. And will look nicely polished. However, it will show rust again very soon. Paint them.

Yah, that's kinda what my last post said. Wire brush (I have a drill-mounted brush) and paint.
