Swapping out 97 trans for an 01 ??

Can I swap out the trans and flywheel from my 97 986 2.5L and replace it with one from an 01 2.7L that I have on hand?

The gearbox housing is similar and will fit.
However, the gearing is not adapted to the 2,5. It will most probably take away the nice temper of this small engine.
Doing it the other way around, putting a 2,5 gearbox on a 2,7 would be really interesting if building a car for track use
