Not sure, but it sure as hell sounds faster Have to say it is quite loud but I guess if you do it and it's too loud then you could probably heat up the pipes and squash them a bit.
I was thinking of using a piece of flexible pipe that could be easily removed and then a plug clamped in the end so it's back to stock.

I always thought the perfect compliment to this mod would be an electric butterfly valve, like they use in Hot Rods. Then you can throttle the sound from quite to loud, a custom PSE system.

I would probably join the 2 bypass pipes and use a single butterfly valve, saving the cost of a second one. Packaging would be tight, but it should fit. Then it's just a matter of running the wires to a power source and switch.

Well I de-snorkled and with the muffler the car is faster. I have an E39 540iA and before the mods it struggled to keep up, in fact it could'nt. The BMW would pull away. Now the BM does not make any ground at all. So yes, it has improved performance. The sound is a killer. I am going to video some this weekend.
