It will help reduce some the intake flow losses if you are de-snorked. The sharp edge on the air box can really reduce flow efficiency!

I am still shaping it and need a wierd router shape to finish it!

Here it is further shaped! I will test it this spring..

Nice ... I also removed the resonator box (wrench actually did it when installing the rebuilt engine) and it sounds and moves nicely ... :dance:

This is much better than the air slamming into the side of the airbox!

beside the theory (that sound correct), do you feel any differences between the full desnork to the "midget" snork?

My car is still in hibernation....it's still salty and very cold here

I will try it out and let you know my impressions. I am not expecting any noticeable change other than acoustics

Sooo when you de-snorkel for that wonderful intake sound you get this:

The air is running into the air box wall and then having to flow over a sharp edge. I just could not stand it! So I took the snorkel and massaged it a little. Notice the difference in flow areas before and after:

So far so good! The nice intake sound is maintained and perhaps a little nicer, while getting rid of the sharp edged entrance to the air box. Throttle response seems a tad crisper but of course this is biased placebo effect comment;). There seems to be less of retort/stumble from the air box when I stab the throttle at idle

very nice idea and execution. While you have the snork out, what's the diameter on it?

thank you. I will try and measure the major and minor diameter when I have the thing out again. Rightly or wrongly I tried to go with the largest reasonable snorkel opening that could be accommodated in there.

IIRC there is another small snorkel opening just past the air box filter (986) and the strategy was to be larger than that...rightly or wrongly

I'm planning on doing something similar and need to figure out what size velocity stack to get.

could you just cut the back out of the airbox so that it is the same size as the opening in the side of the car ...

IIRC it would be difficult as the inside snorkel appeared to a moulded protrusion on the inside wall of the air box you would end up with another sharp edge unless you fit a nice velocity stack in there....as I remember it there is lots of room under the filter so it can be round rather than elliptical...in order to get the "right" area......it was dark and a long time ago though

Hmmm yes went down that road.....if you are after the biggest area it will end up being elliptical, unless you open or remove the side vent tunnel. This biggest area, as I am close to, may not be optimal....so you may get away with a nice round spun velocity stack and have good flow characteristics.....but then there is the problem of adapting the round to the elliptical air box opening
