Porsche gives you that ability in the auto mode to down shift (build revs) without having to take your hands off the wheel. The only other way is to hammer down on the throttle and in some situations that's not what you want to do. Once you don't make any inputs (accelerate, brake), the transmission will go back into the auto mode. Going into the manual mode will give you full control over shifting and will not go back into auto.

Personally I love it. Tooling down the road and some smart ass pulls up next to me wanting to run, I just flick the switch twice...3rd gear...half throttle...and he's in my rear view.
