Both my old 911 and the '99 Box smoke on startup. The 911 frequently, and the Box upon rare occasion.
The horizontal opposed cylinder configuration is frequently offered as an explanation, but answer me this ...
I have had two different VW beetles with opposed 4s and never had anything like the same smoke issue, nor have I heard of people with Subarus (also opposed 4cyl) having smoke on startup. This seems to be a phenomenon pretty much restricted to Porsche 6cyl. Even the old 356 4 cyl didn't do it, as far as I know.
I don't get it, really.
