Aftermarket cruise for older Boxsters
 

I've been looking around forever for an aftermarket cruise contol kit for my non-egas car. A friend of mine put an Audiovox CCS-100 kit on his K-bike a few of years ago and says it works perfectly, but I found that it was discontinued when I tried to buy one.

This company, Murph's Kits, is now importing a clone version made by the company that originally made it for AudioVox and are offering them for sale. It cost me about $200 to get it to my door, and I think it's going to be a lot cheaper and easier than trying to retro-fit factory cruise to a car that didn't come with it.

As far as I know, it is the ONLY aftermarket kit available that will work on a 97 - 99 Boxster. Here's the link:

You are aware that all the early Boxsters were "cruise capable" from the factory; they were just missing the stalk on the steering column and having the function switched on in the DME...............

That's only the e-gas models, 2000 on. Unfortunately not true for the '97 to '99 models years. I wish!

Mark, why this unit? It's made for a motorbike by the look of it - despite the maker trying to wash any legal liability by saying it's not.

You could very well be right about that.

I went with this one because it's a generic, works-on-anything unit. Nobody makes an aftermarket unit specifically for the 97-99 Boxster. One of my buddies put this same kit on his BMW K-bike and was really pleased with it.

I would have liked to retrofit the original Porsche cruise control but I am fairly new to working on cars and it seemed complicated to figure out all the parts I'd need and how to put it all together. I can handle kits with instructions. A man's gotta know his limitations.

I believe the "How To add factory cruise control" for 97-99 Boxsters can be found in Wayne's book. I have not done this but others say it is cheap and easy.

adding cruise control to 2000 S
 

I just purchased a 2000 Boxter S, after owning a 99 Base Boxster which did have cruise control. I already miss the cruise. I'm not sure if it is already set up with the controls needed and just needs the control arm on the steering column. How do I tell? Uptopar.

I know "cheap and easy" is relative. But i dont think adding factory cc to a 97-99 is neither cheap or easy.

The amount of discussion on the 97 to 99 models years is nowhere near adequate to actually accomplish the task, not for me anyway.

You got that right. I didn't pursue the Murphkits option as I really want a factory solution. I keep hoping that some clever devil will post a good tutorial complete with a parts lists and lots of pics, but I guess there's not a lot of interest out there in doing this project, or it's simply too expensive and difficult.

I'd really like to have CC on my '99, but there doesn't seem to be way to do it that is worth it, or that I'm comfortable with.

I have a 98 with cruise control. I also have the original manual and it says it has cruise control as a option.

Why did someone believe the earlier Boxsters didn't offer cruise? I think I read that the 97 was the only model where cruise control was not available.

It's not that they didn't have cruise - it's that from MY 2000 on the cars have e-gas so all you need to do is add the stalk and enable it in the computer. 98/99 cars have mechanical throttle and need a bunch of parts added to put cruise in them.
