Smile Leaky Valve Covers

My friend has an 01 Base model whith leaky valve covers and spark plug tubes also. I say this because I can feel oil on the covers above the spark plug tube and away from the spark plug tube that is clearly leaking.

Can the valve cover gasket be replaced with the engine in the car, or will it have to come out? It seems like it's pretty tight near the front of the engine.

thanks for any help

It's not fun but you can do it with the engine in the car.
