OMG! New Light Flywheel, Clutch, RMS, and front Motor mount installed!!

Hi all,
In an earlier thread I had been hearing a clunk, cluck, cluck sound and could not figure out where and how to fix, so I bite the bullet and took into an Indy shop which I had heard good feedback on.

http://986forum.com/forums/performance-technical-chat/22531-help-clunk%85cluck%85cluck-noise.html
http://986forum.com/forums/performance-technical-chat/22457-brake-caliper-noise.html

We installed a new clutch and light flywheel, old was worn down to the rivets….crazy I know. Front Motor mount was busted, installed the 987 update. And since we were in there, we updated the RSM seal and checked the IMS, looked fine.

Anyhow, it turns out the clunk, cluck noise was coming from a axle cover that connects to the transmission. For some odd reason, no idea how, maybe previous owner, the cover was dented and cut into…really odd.

My car drives like new now, smooth and quiet. Such a big different!!!

If anyone is looking for an Indy shop in the San Francisco Bay area, I highly, A+++, recommend TheRennShop:

Marvin is more attentive that my Barber and Therapist combined. He really knows his stuff.

hey thanks for the pictures! let us know how the AASCO works for you.

Thats a single row IMS bearing in your engine.. based on the deeply set IMS flange.
While it was apart you should have at least removed the seal from the factory bearing while you were in there.. It only takes 20 minutes to do.

That dent on the axle cover won't create a noise unless the cage/ balls of the CV joint contact it... I bet the sound was a torn engine mount.

Jake would my 2000 3.2 likely have the old double row bearing?

Maybe, maybe not... You never know what you have till the trans is pulled.

Glad to hear it runs smooth, when I first put my Assco LW flywheel, I was aware of a little more vibration from the engine than with the OEM unit. But I love the engine responsiveness with it. What I dont like is the rattle when the car is in neutral and the clutch is out. I have over 40K with the LW flywheel, but may be needing a new clutch in the next 10K or so. When its time to replace the clutch, I will put in a new, replacable friction plate for the LWF and Spec sprung clutch (OME clutch in there now).

crios -

does the car seem a lot quicker/zippier now that you have the LWFW?? I had done a LWFW on a couple prior cars...a miata and an RX7.... on both those cars, it did feel like it revved up quicker, and shifted mor easily... how do you like it on the Boxster???

how much did all that work run you?? :(

crios 11-22-2009 03:01 PM

I spent around 3K with everything listed, including oil change and trans oil change. It would have easily cost me 5k plus at a dealer.

My car does drive great, very responsive and love the feel of it. My comparison of before though was from a car in bad condition, busted motor mount, clutch worn down to the rivets, so any change was a positive change.

The sound in nuetral is fine, but again I have a new motor mount, I hardly feel anything. I do hear the sound if I get out of the car and put my ear to the ground, but no sound in the cabin.

Jake, why did Porsche make some cars with a single row IMS and other with a double row? Which ones seem to fail more?

I figured it was preobably the CV joint clunking or the trunk monkey :) nice pics, thanks!

I think disclaimers should be used posting or replying to theads If a conflict of interest could be claimed.

such as:

WARNING: I make a living selling/installing parts for Porsche Boxsters.

This is totally uncalled for.

These people are experts because they make a living working on these cars and while it is true they are here to incite business, they are also here to inform and educate. It is up to the consumer to research and judge if the information given here is valid and the adviser is sincere. In this case, the man was giving free advice with no intent in his statement to sell anything.

Would you prefer if some backyard mechanic gave out advice who "thinks" they know, only because they don't make money at working on Porsches?

Why the hell does it matter what I do to make a living? I drove one of these cars to my shop today and I am a Porsche Enthusiast just like you.

Hating the vendors won't get your vehicle very developed.. Porsche doesn't give a damn about your car after the sale, so you'll be relying on people just like me for as long as you continue to own it.

Plus, people know who I am, no need for a disclaimer. Just type it in Google.

Conflict of interest?! Seriously? Your bigger concerned should be advice that has no basis in experience from a source that to you exists only as an online persona. The last thing we want to do is drive off those who actually work on these cars and know what they are talking about.

crios 11-23-2009 10:03 AM

So much drama :D

Jake, why did Porsche make some cars with a single row IMS and other with a double row? Which ones seem to fail more and why?

Jake Raby 11-23-2009 10:28 AM

No one knows why Porsche did what they did.. Anything I post about that would be assumption.

The single row bearings certainly seem to fail more, they should because they are 1/2 as substantial as the dual row.. BUT there are no blanket statements.

jaykay 11-23-2009 07:58 PM

Thanks for the information....I interested as I know the double has more capacity and was hoping I have that one!
