Shifter feels rough
 
Hello all, this is my first post on the forum.

I purchased a 98' Boxster about five months ago ( pics here http://www.imagecubby.com/casprog ) very fun car!

Everything seems great except for the shifting. Every time I shift, it feels rough and clunky. I never experience any problems keeping the car in gear so I'm not sure if it's the clutch or not. It feels just as rough even if the car is off and you just play with the shifter. Also if the car is in neutral, you feel a little resistance moving the shifter left and right.

Could this be linkage or something more serious?

I've got similar complaints about my car. I have noticed that it's mostly when the engine is cold, second can be a little tight, and there are times where it really doesn't want to go into third.

Once I've been driving for 20 mins, things start to losen up, somewhere around 35mins it's quite smooth. But each gear still feels different, which makes me wonder if my linkage needs adjusting also.

I've replaced the engine mount and tranny fluid. Engine mount helped some, going to Redline gear oil made it worse when cold, but better when warm.

I also recently changed my gear oil hoping it may help but I don't really feel much of a difference. I replaced the gear oil with Redline 75W90NS.

Ditto, mine has 17K miles and when it's cold here in Chicago it's stiff for the first 10 minutes and when it warms up it's smooth.
