free wheelin starter

went to start my 2002 tip boxster tghis morning and the starter engaged for a second and then begin to spin without being engaged. tried a few more times but didn't have time to waste so took the jeep to work.
my question is.. should I replace or rebuild the entire starter? the motor sounds good but obviously it isn't engaging. it was a chilly morning, would that have anything to do with it?
Thanks

Your bendix drive is either sticking or has failed. You need to pull the starter and lubricate the drive unit to see if it recovers; if it doesn’t, you need a new/rebuilt unit…………
