Just had a funny conversation with softronic about a reflash..

<You>: thanks
< - Porsche Specialist>: I don't have a user account to see the price. Scott and I have worked out that custom tunes are not part of the special however
< - Porsche Specialist>: so the flash is much different and for that car does require you to mail in your ECU
<You>: 716 on a 3.4 996
< - Porsche Specialist>: yeah it is different price
<You>: why is the tune different is my question?
< - Porsche Specialist>: its not a simple obdii flash
< - Porsche Specialist>: difference paremeters etc
<You>: if it is the same dme and the same motor what are the variables?
< - Porsche Specialist>: Jay, I am not able to answer the indepth tuning functions, I can tell you that the conversion or custom files are not on special

Can anyone here tell me the difference in what I need as opposed to a regular 996 3.4?

You know, you got me too Jaay. I was wondering the same thing when I saw that FVD sells a flash for the 3.4 conversion at a much higher price. As far as your car is concerned, how does it really know whether that 3.4L is in a 996 or 986? I'm sure the exhaust and intake are both slightly different as far as flows, but if the conversion is done right there really should not be a significant difference. You should be able to run just fine with an OEM 996 3.4L reflash. Is that what you're running now? If you want more power from something like a FVD reflash, I wouldn't see why a standard 996 3.4L reflash wouldn't work and what the difference would be between that and a 986 3.4L conversion reflash.

If the FVD sales rep can't answer that question, then I would ask them who can? Get the name of someone at FVD who can answer your question in the detail that you need. It's DEFINITELY a question worth asking!

I am now up to 3 companies that want too much money for and won't, refuse to tell me why.

Todd Holyoak is probably your best source for info on DME software to get the most out of your 3.4 Boxster. He just "gets it".

For a custom dyno tune, Farnbacher Loles are some of the most experienced Porsche race tuners and are not too far away from you.

I'd hook up the water lines that run into the Oil Sep., I have a feeling it might help.

I'd have a problem with that. You want your car tuned on a Dyno. i'm am currently looking at http://www.evomsit.com/Porsche_MAIN.htm they should have dyno and Vid for your 3.4. I havn't called them, so I have no idea about pricing. probably High.

The 99 (and older) ECU can not simply reflashed via thru the OBCII socket. That is why you have to send in your ECU. They have to open it up to reprogram the eprom...or they may just replace it since I am not sure if it is re-writeable.

I am guessing that's the reason for the higher cost, they actually have to do a little manual labor instead of simply sending you a file to upload to your ECU.

Even with the bit of labor involved...$500 more for a pre-2000 flash is simply nuts imo but then I really don't know what is entirely involved either.

More or less what I was getting at was that if you are going to be paying a large amount of money for an ECU eprom, re-flash, etc.... It Should come with a before and after Dyno. So you don't end up paying for no or worse performance results.

I am going to get the car tuned up in CT. I still have to go back to the dyno and get the car dynoed one more time for the techno torque numbers after the learning curve. If they have time today I may go and get it done.

I'm interested to see the results. If there is anything there worthwhile I am thinking about working off the same idea and having the entire T split custom made to split the air flow all the way back to the TB.
