front brake calipers - just curious

I have noticed on new vehicles and especially performance orientated that the fron brake calipers are positioned at the rear of the disc, rather than over the fron of the disc as was done in old vehicles. I can see there is a weight distribution advantage for placing the caliper at the rear of the front discs, but what other reason could it be ? just curious...
