Unhappy Metallic Knocking Noise... scared!!

Hi

Recently purchased a 97 Boxster... 69k miles full service history etc. Clean car.

3 days in and a horrific rattle kicked in in the engine. It's a metallic knock noise that's timed to the rev of the engine. Also when idling.

Straight to Porsche Authorised Service Centre. After days trying to get the head off they tell me it's a problem with Piston no. 1. The piston can be moved freely with hand. It's the "looseness" that's causing the problem. They've never seen the problem before!

I'm told another 12 - 20 hours (at €120 per!) to further investigate and (hopeully) complete the fix.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Does it need a new engine??

Thanks

K
