Fuel Pump or Variocam

Just woundering an 97 Box driver experienced that, I found the engine sound suddenly boost up around 3,000 rpm when I hold the gear in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, may be in 5th (I'm not sure). I think the engine sound should be linear feeling and the Variocam may not be kicked-in at 3,000 rpm. Does anyone know this sympton about the fuel pump or really a Varicam kicked-in?

Hard to say what you're hearing from across the Pacific, but the Boxster engine comes "on the cam" at about 3,000 - 3,200 rpm, so it would be unusual if you did not feel an increase in performance, and sound, at about that rpm.
My old 911 did the same thing. It felt like it got a couple extra cylinders at 3,200 rpm.
