Cleaning Throttle Body - 986 Forum - The Community for Porsche Boxster & Cayman Owners

Hey guys, I've noticed that my idle sometimes fluctuates, and from what I've learned here, it could be that my throttle body needs a nice cleaning. (eGas car). I'm going to take the TB off to do a thorough front/back cleansing. So my question is, do the throttle bodies on the 986 use a gasket?

(Most of my previous cars used gaskets from the throttle body to the Intake manifold, and would require either replacing the gasket each time you took it off, or reusing a gasket/using gasket maker filling.)

From the posts I've read so far about cleaning the 986 TB, no one has mentioned a gasket...

Can anyone chime in on this? And if it doesn't use a gasket, what steps can be used to prevent any sort of air leak upon reinstalling the TB? and does anyone know what is the proper Torque spec for the TB bolts?

There's a gasket. You probably should replace it.

There is a gasket, the one on my non e-gas was a rubber band like gasket that fit between the intermediate shaft between the intakes and the throttle body. It may be hard to see because it may be covered with grime but it should be there. It's $3 or something like that,if you already have a reason to place a order with Sunset Imports or such I'd buy another one,but it will be o.k. if you reuse it.

Hi Guys,

Cleaned the throttle body today & fixed my hunting at idel problem. Was very easy and took me a total of about an hour all up. I took a few pics to show how it's done if anyone is interested.

I understand it is a very common problem with our cars although even my specialist Porsche mechanic thought it was something more serious like a vacume leak or soemething.

Anyway she now idles at about 700rpm rock solid after a few minutes after start up.

I'll post a few pics & a brief guide in the DIY Section

Great, I tried cleaning my MAF to see if that would help my idle problem but it didn't so it sounds like throttle body is next.

Thanks for the responses guys! I just picked up some CRC throttle body cleaner and some CRC MAF cleaner as well. I'll be cleaning out the TB and MAF hopefully this or next weekend.
