Oil Filter housing and bypass valve

I was helping a friend change his oil in a new Boxster. All went well until he dropped the filter housing and the spring loaded (I assume 'pass valve' popped out). We went over to the local Porche dealer and purchased a new one but I was wondering if that piece can be reused again? Also, for those of you who have changed your own oil, do you insert the filter into the housing and then screw it onto the vehicle or do you first place the filter in place and then screw the housing on?
