Brake Wear Question

I recently purchased a 2002 Boxster and have since found your great web site.

Every once in a while the Brake Wear light will come on for a few hours and then turn off for another week or two. It also comes on every time I take the car to a car wash.

Do you think the brakes need replacing right now? Is this an early warning? The light comes on for only a few hours then turns off for weeks?

Also, if she does need new brakes should I go to the dealer or is taking it to a foreign car mechanic ok? I figure if it is just brake pads I might as well save a few bucks.

I am new to the East Bay area so if anyone knows of a good place to go....

Thanks to all.
