Power to the iPod!!

Using the advice from a sportbike friend I finally got power to my iPod.

I bought a fuse extender (HHA fuse accessory) from Auto Zone. I connected the hot wires and attached the ground wire to a torque screw behind the stereo head unit. Now for power.

Our fuse boxes are the same as in the 911's, so there is an empty slot in row D that's for the 911's rear windows. I just plugged the extender in there and put a 7.5 amp fuse on the top slot on the extender. Turn the key and WOOT I don't have to worry about charging my iPod before taking the Box for a spin.

It took about an hour to do, most of the time was used to find a good spot for the extender. Then I kept putting the actual fuse in the bottom slot when it needs to be on the top.

Nice job Chills!
I have to consider doing this at some point. For now, I think my IPOD will last like 6 or 8 hours so that is plenty for me. I still cant believe how excellent the IPOD adapter works with the CDR220! What a difference from the old RF modulator.

Thanks for the tip!

ehd, check out this link...
If you have the CDR 220, this is a great piece...
although mine looks different than the one in the pix... I dont have the
RCA plug inputs or the mini jack... it is a simple IPOD dock hookup and
then wire harness to the back of the radio with ground and power wires on
it.

Worth every penny!

Question iPod controls

I just got a 2001 911 a few weeks ago and I have a few questions about this setup. I assume that the CDR-220 radio is the same between the Boxter and the 911 and that this will work for me. Assuming it will, where does the iPod control happen? Is it though the radio or through the iPod? If its through the radio, what are the limitations? For instance, I have heard with other vehicles that when you hook the iPod up through an adapter like this you only get limited 'play list' capabilities.

Thanks for any comments on this!

You have to control the iPod functions from the iPod itself. The volume is done from the radio, however.

Here is a picture of my set-up, which has changed since.

sounds like its working great and hopefully you have no alternator whine. but wouldn't it have been easier to splice into the power that goes into the headunit? pin 8 is a ground. pin 5 is switched 12v +. of course i haven't tried this yet, but i am planning on it.

I didn't want to mess with the wires in the head unit. My skills weren't up to that at the time.

Since then I've removed my iPod cable and installed this (all by myself!!):

I rebuilt the faceplate with fiberboard and hand stretched vinyl, so it looks factory, not like what you see in the pics. I'll try to get an updated pic tomorrow.
