------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. No flaming: debates are ok, but responding to threads just to incite or start an argument or conflict is not permitted. Personal attacks, if hostile in nature, are not allowed.
2. No pointless threads or excessive posting allowed: Yes, this is an off topic forum, but let's keep the subject matter of an intelligent nature. If you're bored, play a game on your playstation or better yet, wash your car! Posting responses to increase your 'number of posts' is also not allowed.
3. Absolutely no pornographic, objectionable, or illegal material allowed. No pictures, links to pictures, discussion of porn...etc. is allowed. Objectionable material includes graphic gore, tasteless jokes, and any off-color subject matter. Such posts will be deleted, and such posts are grounds for banning.
4. No discussion of any illegal activity permitted. This not only jeoparizes this forum, it will ultimately jeopardize you! Linking to any site that deals with illegal activity is not allowed. Posting information on how to defraud a company or misuse a product or any promotion of any illegal activity will not be tolerated. Again, such posts are grounds for banning. Observe all copyright laws when posting copyrighted material.
5. Do not impersonate other people or use fake aliases. Only one userid per person allowed.
6. No profanity allowed. Make every effort to express your views without resorting to trash talk.
7. Respect other's privacy: no posting of pictures, phone numbers, email addresses...etc. of another individual without their permission.
When a user is banned, the following schedule will be enforced:
- First infraction from this point forward = 3 day ban.
- Second infraction = 6 day ban
- Third = 2 week ban
- Fourth = 1 month ban
- Fifth = 2 month ban
- Sixth = 4 month ban
...and so on
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, some posting etiquette:
The Subject line
Please use this to accurately describe what the thread is about. Simply stating:
HEY: CHECK THIS OUT! is not descriptive enough. Perhaps try:
Check out my new widget instead. Those who are not interested in widgets won't have to check out someone's new toy.
Using QUOTES
Often, when one wishes to respond to, or agree with what someone else posted, we see the following:
Quote:
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blha blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blha blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blha blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blha blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah I like the color green. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blha blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blha blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
|
Me too!
Note that there is no reason to quote the entire post, just use the ". . ." to indicate that only a section of what was originally written is being quoted:
Quote:
. . .I like the color green.. . .
|
I like green too.
Save some bandwidth!
Also: there is no need to include a picture in a quote - just do the following:
Quote:
Posted by someone else
(Picture of hot car)
|
That's a hot car, man!
If one is quoting something from another source, it is good to include a link to the original site, and shorten the quote using ". . ." However, it is important not to take things out of context when abbreviating quotes.
Dealing with moderators
If you view something here that requires attention by a moderator, you can click on the 'Report this post to a moderator.' When doing so, please include some detailed informtion on what you are reporting, including the user, what page said post was made on, and any other details. The greater the detail supplied to the moderator, the easier it will be to track down the offensive post.
Trying to get things by the moderator, like inappropriate pictures, links, personal attacks is not tolerated in this forum. When you play the game, "Stump the moderator" you automatically lose.
There is a fine line between censorship and "posting freedom." Please keep in mind that the Off Topic Discussion Forum is intended for auto enthusiasts. It is NOT an 'anything goes' forum. (See the rules above) Use common sense and post only appropriate topics here. If you are uncertain a topic is appropriate here, send a quick note to the moderator. That is a better action to take than posting something and then waiting for the moderator to react to the thread! Use common sense - remember: something that one may consider to be inoffensive may be very offensive to others. It is best to err on the conservative side regarding questionable posts. If you want to view things that are inappropriate to post here, no one is keeping you from surfing on over to such sites.
The OT Forums were created so that the technical forums wouldn't be cuttered with off topic posts. So enjoy these forums.
Happy posting!
