Glad that everyone was ok, that is all that matters!

I'll say that the car doesn't matter at all. Kids kill themselves in Civic's and Accord's every week.

If they're going to drive fast, they will do it in a Kia just as well as a Boxster. Very few of us grew up with Porsche's but I bet that we all drove our parents POS cars way fast enough to kill ourselves. Nothing has changed between generations.

If the kid is hellbent on driving like an idiot I agree that they'll do it in whatever is available be it a Boxster or Checker Marathon cab. Stupidity on their part would somewhat negate my concern for their well being.

If the kid is simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and is a victim / collateral damage of another's carelessness / recklessness (as was the case above) I prefer they be in a safer car, pretty much the point of the OP............

2000- 2004 jeep liberty - Lousy gas mileage but 4wd for any weather. There are millions out there for reasonable $$. Easy to work on
My daughter's 2003 had 2 accidents, not her fault
1st - Acura pull out in front, daughter was going 40-45, Jeep destroyed it. I drove the Jeep home 15 miles. It needed some front plastic pieces and some paint

2nd - Civic rear ended drove a bit under the Jeep. Civic front end, hood and fenders mangled. Jeep needed a new muffler/tail pipe and a new gas tank for safety sake. I drove it home

I just bought it from her with 130k miles and it runs great. Now my Boxster sits in the garage

We had another wreck just yesterday. It is the 4th time this year that we have had one of the less than stellar students from "that side of town" rear end someone else.

We have an off campus career and technology center that students go to for classes for a part of the day, the school makes everyone take a single route to and from and they must follow the busses for the students that do not drive. All three times a student in an suv (explorer, Cherokee, and liberty) did not pay attention comming to a stop sign in the line of traffic and in each case rear ended the car infront of them. Two of these occasions pushing the middle car into a third.

There are definitely benefits to buy your kids a car that brakes within a decent distance, which that does not change the fact that all of the students at fault were not paying attention and going too fast.
