Help identifying Transmission axle flange

After drive I started smelling oil field, investigation found a leaky trans shaft seal. Was going to change gear oil any way, so ordered parts and started disassembly. After pulling the axle flange I noticed the bearings on the flange are very rough. So I need to order new flanges. Looking at parts diagram there are 3 different flanges. Since they are special order, nonreturnable part, I want to be sure of the order. Can anyone help? JFP in PA?

You are going to need to work with a good parts department to get the correct ones, as they have to be matched to the transmission. Suggest you call Sunset parts on Beaverton Oregon, they should be able to set you up.

Thanks for the quick reply! I just got off the phone with Pelican, They looked under the VIN (WPOCA2988WU623575) and think it is p/n 012409343AC. I will call Sunset and see if they concur. Also what is best method for driving flange back in? Thanks

As mentioned elsewhere, you need the gear box number to get the right parts. You will also find out that Sunset is cheaper than Pelican.

I use a small, soft faced dead blow hammer to get them back in just make sure the splines are aligned before hammering away.

Okay. Just got off phone with Sunset. Parts guy says these parts are VIN split. His part number is 012409343K. He says P/N changed 800 units after mine. The number Pelican gave me is for the later cars.

Can you tell me where I might find the Trans #. Thanks

Code under hood is G8600-000

Code bottom of trans is CWA0580

The code is usually stamped in one of two places; on top or on the bottom.

From experience, I would go with Sunset's part number, these guys are no fools which is why we do a lot of business with them.

Really appreciate your expertise JFP. I found the Code on the bottom of trans after looking in my Bently manual, although book says it's 5 digit and mine is 4 digit, CWA0508. Anyway there is only 1 of the part in USA so I ordered it. Hopefully the other one is OK. Thanks again.

The part number SHOULD be on the part. Look closer next time. Porsche-Audi-VW has a nice habit of putting the part number on damn-near everything, especially drive line and hard parts.

Well they say you should learn something new every day! Since I had some time I searched the www and found a transmission manual. Page 91 has the following Note:
"The flanged shafts are installed with Polygonal bearings. The rough running of these bearings when the flanged shafts are not installed does not indicate that the bearings are faulty. The polygonal bearings can be replaced only with the shaft."
I had assumed they were needle bearings. Polygonal bearings, wow. Porsche uses some interesting stuff! Maybe this can help the next person that attempts to change the seal and expects these bearings to be nice and smooth.

Completed the repair in July '16, 25 k ago.Transmission is great. quiet and dry. Buy the Genuine Porsche part, it is noticeably superior to even the OEM. I also replaced the circlip.
