1998 2.5L swap into 2000s boxster

G’day all I am new to Boxster owner ship. I have just brought a Boxster (2000 s) with a motor that has been put into it from a 1998 Boxster 2.5L, I’m wondering if this will work with the Boxster s wiring already in the car? I also seem to missing some plugs into the ecu but not sure if they are for the Tip Tronic gear box (mine has the 6speed Manuel) can people please help me!! Thank you

Welcome!

I'm sorry... but wiith the recent extraordinary run of spam on our site...

I read your post and my buullshiit meter went off the charts.

You've got a 2.5 in a car born with a 3.2. You wonder if it will work with the wiring in the car? Are you telling us that you bought the car not running? Sorry. Smells like bull****************.

You may be missing a plug into the ecu, but you're not sure if it is for a tiptronic? Then you tell us you own a manuel (sp). What's a newbie doing already interrogating the ecu? Sorry.Smells like bull****************.

Please accept my apology if I am incorrect. If you don't mind... post a picture of the car. Share more details about the car... When you bought it... how much... where did you find the car... how any miles... you know... details so we know you're not blowing smoke up our ass.

Welcome to the club?

Thanks for the welcome I thought it would have been a bit more excepted but any way.

Correct I am wondering if it will work with the current wiring in the car. Yes I brought it not running the 2.5L motor has about 150 xxx kms on it

I know it’s not a tiptronic, it is a 6 speed manual. I have seen photos of course ecus in other Boxsters online and in the ecu it has about 3(I think) grey connects and two black ones. Mine only has the two black ones , but I think the grey ones are for the tiptronic which I don’t have so there for would not need them.

I can post a picture later o if that’s what you really need to belive me.

About ten tears ago I had a 2000 S with a 1997 2.5L engine in it.

The engine wire harness from the 1998 engine will not plug into the 2000 S ECU. You can use a throttle body and wire harness from a 2000 - 2002 engine on your 2.5L if you adapt the intake to make it fit.

If you can post some pics of the wires at the ECU and a view of the engine with the cover removed, I can probably help to sort thing out.

Alright. Cool.

Welcome to the club. Good luck with the car. You've got the Speed Yellow. Nice.

What I see in the pictures is that you have the ECU from the 1998 and the ECU from the 2000 S. If the wiring harness has not already been modified, it would probably be best to get an engine harness from a 2000 - 2002 engine along with a throttle body. *The tube from the Air Oil Separator will also need to be modified to connect to the '00-'02 throttle body. With that, the 1998 engine can run in the 2000 chassis with minimal modification.

1997 - 1999 Boxsters have a mechanical throttle cable to control the engine. Your car does not have a throttle cable visible in the pics. The 2000 model does not have a throttle cable to control the throttle body because the 2000 and later models use an electronic throttle.

I don't see a tube going from the air filter housing to the throttle body. The missing tube should have the Mass Airflow Sensor.

It's going to take some 'hacking' skill to get this to work, but it can be done.

Also note that with only minor modification you can put the entire intake from a 2.7L (2000-2002) engine on a 2.5L engine.

Hi again, I am looking a getting a 3.2 engine wiring harness but I seem to be finding two different ones there is one with a long plug on the end see photo with blue circle and one that doesn’t have it. How do I know what one I need?

The difference is that the one with the blue circle is for a Tiptronic transmission and the other is for a manual transmission. The circled connector plugs into the transmission control module - not used in a car with a manual transmission.

So good news it started!!! I ended up getting a 2.7L wiring harness for it that was pretty much just plug and play. I do have a few issues with it tho, I have a few codes come up and it idles a bit rough due to a cam sensor problem.
