986s new engine

Hey 986forum members,

I had posed the question of getting a 996 turbo into a 986 and some of the replys had great info and lead to the conclusion that the work and money needed were too much. I am considering a 9a1 engine from a 2.7l caymen. I do know that there would be electrical to sort out. but my main question is will this engine drop in and bolt up to the existing mounts and gearbox? If so it offers closed deck construction, no IMS issue and more hp to boot granted not heaps. Any information is greatly appreciated!

You are looking at a complete drivetrain and electrical system swap, not simply an engine transplant.
By the time you've tallied up all the costs of this sort of conversion, you could buy yourself a very nice 996, 997 or Cayman, put the key in and drive it.
Or you could spend a year or two busting knuckles and filling up your cuss box trying to do a very complicated driveline conversion in an at best 12 year old vehicle.
Just my $.02.

Engine transplant, Looking to do what Todd Holyoak has done with a 3.6l 997 engine. I want to used my 6speed Trans and only add/replace wiring or computers where required. I know that the 9a1 engine or 997.2 is different fromt he m96/97 and just wanted to know if it will bolt directly in and up to the 6speed trans. I think the trans will work as the 997.2 was offered with such a configuration just with the small 997 unit. as for the mounting and bracing that is where i have no clue. Cheers for the reply

Why not consider either the LS3 or Subaru conversion. There are some great threads on here about both.

I have the perfect engine for you, if you want to do a DFI transplant.

It has less than 10K miles on it, and I bought it to use for my hands on classes. I ended up doing them differently, so I have no use for it.. Its not even dirty. 8K buys it, 100% complete, as a pullout from a 2012 Cayman. Its an MA 122, 2.7 liter

Pelican Parts has a very good guide on attempting this sort of project:
