convertible top motor trouble

So I had the typical problem with plastic ball cups breaking under stress on the push rods. Got new ones on, that was the easy part.
Reconnected the clam shell and tested the motor and transmissions - they worked fine putting the clam shell into the 'top down' position.
BUT.... when I tried to press the button up for the 'top up' position, the transmissions would not turn in the opposite direction like they were supposed to. They still kept turning forward, locking the clam shell down tighter.
I had to disconnected the cables and back them off with my drill.
Has anyone else had this problem?
So far, haven't tried to reconnect the clam shell and give it another try. Don't want the same thing to happen again.
So why did pushing the 'top up' button result in the transmissions still wanting to turn forward and pulling the clam shell down so tight???
They should have turned opposite direction to raise it but they didn't
