IIRC - the cars in your model year that were ordered with the OBC enabled have the fancy screen. Those not ordered with the OBC enabled have the older screen. I probably read that at one of the renn forums. It is not applicale to my model year so I was not paying a lot of attention to the information.

My understanding is that the OBC will work fine with your cluster, but you just won't have the same high-res dot matrix display.

I may have my dot matrix cluster for sale soon. I just found a 996 cluster and plan on swapping that in. Now I need to see if I can find white gauge faces for the oil pressure and volt meter that match the script used on the Boxster.

Wiring

My car came with Cruise, my Tech said it was easy to turn on the OBC...will the stalk just plug in ??

I added a OBC Stalk and computer to my E36 years ago, I had to take the dash out and change a good bit of the wiring...but it was not a tough job at all.

The stalk will attach to the existing steering column but you will need to either make the hole for the stalk to come through the rubber or buy the 2 opening rubber.

Also you will need to make up a loom to connect the stalk to the cluster as per :

mctigercom choose either screw, I chose the bottom one and did not have to sand it.
Picture is before upgrade started.

Danch this is what my display now looks like with the OBC enabled, maybe it can do more but all I was really interested in was the temp being displayed. When I use the OBC stalk to scroll the display only changes where the temperature is displayed.
Danch, what is a "loom"!!?? "Switch" I think your referring to stalk?

As far as the opening that is required in the rubber cover to accommodate the new stalk, I would not buy a new one because it is already there on the existing one, you just have to use a sharp blade and cut it out. This photo is before the 2nd stalk was addded.

Pdwight if you check out the previous pics in this thread you should be able to see how the new OBC stalk is connected to the control box. If you want more definition in the picture PM me and I'll send you the actual photo so you can zoom in on it. If you have an 03-04 the wiring harness you have to make up is not difficult. With the VW wires no soldering is necessary.

Nope loom , the small wiring loom that you make up using the vw wires
That's what I call it anyway

Think I've talked myself into swapping out for a C2 cluster at the same time

[QUOTE=danch;401674]Nope loom , the small wiring loom that you make up using the vw wires

Ah, ....Ok, I was picturing a Weavers loom and wondering how we could relate a weavers loom with a porsche's instrument dash...... or why would a person want to install it in a porsche and what benefit would it be to the instrument panel? So I then concluded, he was going to do the RED GREEN thing. He was going to use the Porsche OBC to control the loom to make the loom work faster and thereby more profitable and now being Porsche mobile he was going to be able to set up at the different woolen mills faster than his competitors. All Porsche owners are always looking for an excuse to drive their cars.
Thank god you cleared that up quickly because I'm pretty sure there would have been a hell of a mess with a Loom trying to operate at the speeds a Porshe Boxster could potentially bring it to. I don't think even RED GREEN himself would have enough Duck Tape on hand to fix the remnants of that type of mess.
Maybe a lowered power car like a Ford Fiesta would be a better choice for an endeavor like this.

perhaps a micro Nano Loom weaving tiny microscopic Carbon-Carbon particles into a matrix that is fed directly into the IMS bearing so it will not fail ever.

All kidding aside....a source for the parts

2
000-979-010
Connector wire and pins for cluster (Volkswagen part)

3
000-979-009
Connector wire and pins for stalk (Volkswagen part)

I need 5 wires, a good source instead of paying a Dealer 25 bucks for each wire

Pdwight if your working with a 2003-04 you only use 009 wires (5). These wires have the proper pins already crimped on the ends.
You will also need a OBC connector (plug socket) # 999-650-513-40 (confirm this number).
Check out sunset imports porsche.

I got my plug, 999-650-513-40, at the local Porsche dealership for $10.11 and the wires, 000-979-009-E, at the Volkswagen dealer down the street from the Porsche dealer for $11.00 each and the blade connector for the ground at Home Depot, 10 for $2.12.

I had the dealer enable the OBC last fall and just got around to doing my install last night. Thanks for the info for 2003-2004 cars. This was very helpful.

For those wanting to do this DIY, there is a stalk on eBay at a pretty good price. I have no affiliation.

So in trying to make sense of this mod, is it easier to swap the complete 4/stalk to a 3/stalk car by adding the extra cable for the OBC function? Mine is 02. And then enable OBC function?
