Cool Painted Door Airbag Covers Black

I just go my Boxster back from the shop and had to install my new speakers and put the door panels back on. So I decided to change the color of leather covering the air bags.

I already covered the door pocket covers and side mirror covers in leather, so I thought it would be a cool upgrade.

Here is the restore project: 1998 Boxster Project - Complete Restoration

Here is the DIY for the leather covers: Leather Door Pocket Covers

So, it was pretty easy to change the color and if you like it, go for it!

First I had to clean the leather of all oils and such. So I just wiped them down with acetone. Wasn't worried about removing any of the beige color for obvious reasons.

Here is the door panel after cleaning the leather cover.

Next, I covered the surrounding area with painter's tape. To cover the rest of the panel, I used a plastic trash bag.

Here are the doors wrapped in the plastic bags and sprayed with the Dupi-Color Flat Black Vinyl & Fabric spray.

I sprayed 4-5 thin coats. The stuff dries really fast. Just to be safe though, I let them sit in the sun for a few hours before I handled them.

Here they are after I removed the tape and bags.

There you go - the final product. I really like how they came out.

What do you think?

Now I'm thinking of dying the carpet on the bottom of the door panel black too. You think that would look good? I guess I could photoshop it and see.

Black Carpet Photoship

Here's my idea for the carpet (love photoshop for testing ideas). I like it. What do you think?

You've been very busy! I like the black carpet. Looks good, but since you have done leather on the pocket covers, why not go all the way and do leather on the bottom half as well instead of carpet? Just a thought. The air bag covers look great as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought about the leather below, but I really do like the carpet. Call me crazy
