Guys,

I could use some advice from those of you with the test pipes and TS exhaust. I installed the exhaust but felt there was too much drone, however I still had all 4 cats in my '01 S. I put the stock exhaust back on, but have since installed the 2nd cat delete (which is great).

I live in the mountains, which can really make drone in an exhaust stand out as hills in higher gears can put the car in the 'drone sweet spot'.

Question - does running the TS exhaust with the test pipes in place reduce drone? This is compared to TS exhaust with all 4 cats in place.

Thanks!

Gary

Take a look at my previous posts on this. I do not have any drone to speak of. I have the pipes and the exhaust. I also used better clamps than what came with the pipes.

A few weeks ago I installed headers/high flow cats with the rear cat delete pipes and a Dansk sport muffler. Love the setup but I had a slight leak at the cat delete slip joint. Because of this post I went to Napa and ordered two of the 2 " clamps. I installed them today wow they do make a difference ! Zero leaks and it seemed to very slightly alter the sound of the exhaust for the better. For 22.00 with tax it was a great investment. Appreciate the tip

IMO, those clamps make a big difference. Glad they worked for you:cheers:

Can someone post a link to these better clamps?

Go to Napa and ask them to order you Easy Clamps 2". Napa usually get them to you the next day. These clamps are a must! Just get your arse in the car and drive down to Napa NOW!

Look at page one of this post, scroll down about three quarters down there is a pic of the clamp on the blister card with the part number.

RandallNeighbour 06-06-2014 05:29 PM

I see it now. Thanks!

I don't have cat delete pipes though...

Then why did you ask ? :D

Maybe it is just wishful thinking but I swear my 01 has more get up and go with the secondary cats gone and the aftermarket muffler. No dyno proof but it just feels quicker, and for sure sounds quicker. The best $500 upgrade you can do for putting a smile on your face.

There is definitely a bit more, how much? Who knows. Getting rid of the restrictive second set of cats helps the flow of exhaust.

If I had to guess I'll say an improvement of 5-8 hp. I have a baseline dyno run for my car done by Jake Raby. I'm going to get another run done by Jake now that I have done the headers/high flow cats, cat delete and Dansk muffler to see what they really added. Then plan on doing a UD pulley install by Jake and do one more run to see what that added. If nothing else good data points.

RandallNeighbour 06-07-2014 10:06 AM

With my Che headers, factory cats, and Che muffler, I got 19 hp more on my base Boxster according to dyno runs...

Wasn't Che headers a communist revolutionary? Or am I thinking of Che muffler?:)

I finally got around to installing this onto my car. I'm almost embarrassed to admit it but this install took almost 8 hours. There are three bolts in a triangle formation where the delete pipes attach to the old exhaust. All three on the drivers side were rusted to crap and needed to be drilled off. This took the majority of the time. Also the bolt provided that is designed to attach the muffler was not long enough so I had to make a trip to get a longer one. After 8 long hours I finally got everything on and I could not be more pleased. No leaks, no drone and it sounds amazing. I also really like how it is still a very quiet idle. I know this is totally in my head but it feels like a different car. I cant believe I drove her for three years without this. I think I can feel a bit of a difference in power but really only when revving pretty high. All in all I am very satisfied, thank you so much Top speed!

Sorry I feel a difference, but then again I'm always revving it pretty high.

Guys I'm dusting off this thread to ask a question about these sure seal clamps. Can they be used in place of the other factory clamps ? I have a slight leak on both sides and regardless of how I position the OEM clamps and how tight I can get them they still leak. Will the 2 " sure seal clamps work ? I want to use them on both sides of the U pipes.

Yes. Go take a look at them and you will totally understand the function and how they properly seal a pipe. You can get just about any size you need at Napa. If you don't see the size, you can order it and it typically is there the next morning.

Yeah I am familiar with them as I have two of them on my cat delete pipes. I was just curious if the 2 " will fit both sides of the U tube ? I assume yes but wanted to make sure before I order them.

Had the TSPro exhaust installed without any bypass/delete pipes and now have the infamous drone problem. Looking at getting the "catless test pipe", also from TSPro. Can someone help me with other parts that I need to get along with the test pipes?

While installing the exhaust, my mechanic had to cut the C-pipe (or is it called U-pipe?) between the exhaust and secondary cats because the angle wasn't right between the exhaust and secondary cats with the C-pipe as is.

Now, if I am replacing the secondary cat section with the test pipes, do I need a new set of C-pipes? And, what's this clamp business?

Thanks!

did anybody end up getting some video of the before / after?

Yes is the answer you seek, young skywalker (they would let me just say yes, not enough characters)

Go to Napa and get the 2" Easy Clamps, trust me don't screw around, just do yourself a favor and install them. You can thank me later.

Yep, get the clamps. I get a grin every time I go under a bridge or better yet, a tunnel:D Serious sound, no drone.

gtoger 06-06-2015 07:58 AM

I'll admit, I got this exhaust system purely for looks. It's a cheap enough way to get rid of what my wife not-so-lovingly refers to as the car's butt-hole. I took mine to an exhaust shop and had it welded in rather than use clamps, because I've got bad history with the clamps.

It's a bunch louder now. Jury is still out on if I like it or not but I'm promising to give until at least the next oil change to pass judgement. I *think* I like it, but I need more miles under varying conditions, and I understand it takes some miles to break them in properly.

One thing I did notice is they appear to ship with a coating that, once heated, will flake off in a fine white powder. It wipes right off and doesn't alarm me, just thought I'd mention.

A picture of the installed exhaust:
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1433606254.jpg

To my eye, this is the sort of exhaust tips the car should have shipped with originally.

BruceH 06-06-2015 08:26 AM

Yes, give it some time, the sound will improve. Be careful about wiping anything off of your paint! The exhaust will shed fiberglass for a while. Wiping it off dry will cause scratches:eek: I used a hose to wash it a way.

Nine8Six 06-06-2015 08:31 AM

RE drone; not sure if this relevant but did the aftermarket exhaust swap also and wrapped the pipes from mufflers up to the front cats (asbestos wraps? dunno the name of that stuff). It cancelled all of the drone I was getting in the mid revs. Sounds fab now... in and out of car

Later wrapped the headers also. Keeps the bay cooler :)

Wroom wroom in tunnels here also Bruce loll big time (5~6k rpm and all man)

Oh wow! That's what that is? OK. Yeah, thanks for that tip! I'm anxious to get things broken in. Meanwhile, I kept the old exhaust... just in case.

My old exhaust sat in the garage for awhile, now it's in the attic;)

gtoger 06-06-2015 02:06 PM

Curious on what I should do now that the new exhaust is on. Will the EMC (computer) re-calibrate itself? Do I need to unplug the battery and let it all reset? Something else? Nothing?

BruceH 06-06-2015 02:49 PM

Nothing, except take it for a nice, long, spirited drive. It will learn:cool:

Fintro11 06-12-2015 07:10 PM

I had to cut the one pipe to make it fit, but holy **************** the sound is good :D

BruceH 06-13-2015 06:01 AM

Glad you got it on! Drone? Wait until you get some miles on it, it only gets better:cool: Remember, do not brush off the white fiberglass that you will see on the bumper. Rinse with water! Have a great weekend:cheers:

Question…I bought a slightly used Top Speed type exhaust with no hardware. Will the old mounting bolts to the trans work?
Should I replace the clamps that go from the U pipes to the cats with easy clamps or just use the old ones? Thanks!

Chard 06-18-2015 10:41 AM

If you want to replace clamps (I'd recommend) I have a set for sale that I never installed before selling the car. These sleeves were recommended earlier in this post to cure exhaust leaking. http://986forum.com/forums/324664-post15.html
