Heater core leak?

My 2000 Boxster S recently started blowing fumes (presumably hot cooling fluid) from the central air vents. After shutting off the heater and blower it subsided. A subsequent drive on the highway was without problems and the water temp remained just to the right of center.
Since then and after about 1 liter of water it started getting worse. Meanwhile I also noticed that the passenger footwell became wet.
Either the water hoses feeding the heater core or the heater core itself has sprung a leak.
Is this a repair a handy person can complete or does it need to go to the shop.
Can anyone lead me through the procedure?
What is more likely, a hose or the core itself.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
