DIY: Air Filter - 986 Forum - The Community for Porsche Boxster & Cayman Owners

Hi all, I have basically given the Boxster it's annual service. I ordered plugs, a drive belt, air filter, oil filter, drain plug washer and fuel pump from Pelican parts in the states. The equivalent parts in Australia cost about $450 AUS, I had them delivered to my door for $220 AUS so was definitely worth getting from halfway around the world.

Parts

1) Open the roof so that its 10cm from the windscreen.

2) Pull these cables off

3) Unclip this black plastic strip

4) Push the roof forward towards the front of the car

5) Remove carpet on top of engine cover

6) Unclip plastic engine cover

7) And one DUSTY engine!

This is a good time to clean and get the dust off it. Also a good time to check the power steering fluid. Mine was low so I had to get a can from the local Porsche dealer.

8) You can now unclip the air filter box and slide the filter and its cradle out.

9) Slide the new filter into the cradle then slide the cradle back into it's spot.

Don't forget to look down inside the filter housing and remove any larger debris (like leaves). Good write up with pics!

Great post/photos.

It gave me the DIY courage to change out my air filter today too, and it really needed a new one.

The outer layer of foam rubber material was starting to crumble and the filter pleats looked really dirty.

That worked great - I was also able to pick out all of the cigarette butts from the previous owner that got snagged at the bottom of air filter compartment.

Excellent write up!
I have only had my 986 for about 1 1/2 weeks now and I was trying to figure out the easiest way to take off the engine cover and check the engine out from above. The hardest part for me was disconnecting the cables.
I also appreciate the comment you made about the power steering fluid. Sure enough, mine was also low. I will get some soon and fill it back up.
I have had VW's and Audi's but nothing puts a smile on my face when I am driving like my Porsche!
