tinted windows

Has anyone tinted the driver/passenger side window? If so, what shade color? Can you post a picture. Was it professional installed? Had any problems with the law enforcemant?

The laws are different in every state. In NY, where I am, you can't have any tint on your driver side front or passenger window. Since we have no other windows, no tint for me!

I actually ended up winning 2 $150 tint gift certificates at a car show once. I ended up just selling them because I couldn't use them.

I have 35% on both side windows. You can't tint the plastic window of the soft top, but if you have the later models with glass in the back, you could tint that the same % or even darker. Or you could even re-do the rear plastic window with a tinted plastic one sold at this web site.

It will match the sides better. Allot of labor involved if you decide to remove the old plastic one.

Looks like in Boston, 35% is allowed :

For most vehicles, aftermarket tinting that registers at least 35% on a tint meter on side windows immediately adjacent to the driver and front passenger seats, and side windows immediately to the rear of the operator and passenger, is acceptable. The rear window may be tinted to the 35% level, but the vehicle must be equipped with two outside rear view mirrors. The windshield may only be tinted down to the AS-1 line, which is usually located in the uppermost (6) inches of the windshield.

MY2000 is tinted and I wouldn't change it. Looks good and keeps the interior cool/protected.

I have 0% tint, Actually makes the windows look invisible... Hell, even makes the convertible top dissappear or appear to be down.

5%

Yes you read it corectly these only allow 5% of the light through. they are against the law and so far in 5 years i have not been stopped while putting on my 140,000 miles.

I like them and I am comfortable with them, i do roll my window down when merging in traffic at night and at dusk.

With the back window unable to be tinted so much light gets into the car that these appear lighter than the 20% i have on my X5.

Tried a DYI on tint, forget it. Use a professional, it is not that much more money.

20% I think -No trouble from 5-0.
Any other color than black, to me, looks ghetto.

Haha! Yeah, if I had gotten a tint, it would have been wasted. I only drive the Box in the summer, at which time the top is ALWAYS down.

Please do post pics. I'm actually thinking of a green tint. Not because I like green but because the tint I'm interested in only comes in green. It's a 70%. I think factory glass is somewhere around 80% green, so it would be like about 2 layers of glass. Should not cause me trouble with the law. The tint I'm interested in is a spectrally-selective product called V-Cool which blocks about 50% of the total light but most of that is heat (infrared) and UV and only a little bit of the visible light.

I'm considering a legal NC tint, but can't decide whether to pull the trigger. I have a GAHH convertible top with glass rear window. How would the installer get to the glass to apply the tint?

Jeph, what did you do to facilitate applying the tint to the hardtop glass? Remove it and place it upside down on a protected surface? I assume you removed the top for the installer and replaced it when finished.

Thanks,

ddb

thanks for feedbacks...I really like the 20% black pics.....sweet. I would never dyi-i inquired prices, some of the local shops are asking 60 bucks a window I think that reasonable.
Adding tinted windows to my list once I get my baby back on the road....Come on SPRING!!!

Yes, I removed the hard top for the guy and it was propped upright while he put the tint on. I'm sure installers hate constant customer supervision, but I was there the whole time to watch the process. Partly because I wanted to see it done, and also because I didn't have ride home in the meantime.
